How to Use the Calculator

  1. Enter the dimensions (length, width, height) of your package in inches
  2. Enter the weight of your package in pounds
  3. Add multiple packages if shipping more than one
  4. The calculator will automatically determine density in PCF
  5. Your NMFC freight class will be displayed based on the density
  6. Use the freight class for accurate LTL shipping quotes

Tips for Accurate Freight Classification

  • Always measure to the farthest points of the package
  • Include packaging and pallet dimensions in measurements
  • Round up measurements to the nearest inch
  • Consider fragility and special handling requirements
  • Verify classification with your carrier for specialty items

Common Lighting Industry Classifications

LED Panel Lights: Typically class 85-125 depending on packaging density

Chandeliers: Usually class 150-250 due to fragility and irregular shape

Industrial Fixtures: Often class 70-100 based on metal content and density

Light Bulbs: Generally class 125-175 requiring careful handling

Freight Class Reference Guide

This free freight class calculator helps shippers determine the correct NMFC freight classification for LTL (Less Than Truckload) shipments. Use this freight density calculator to compute shipping density in pounds per cubic foot (PCF), then find the corresponding freight class from 50 to 500. Whether you need a quick freight class lookup or a detailed NMFC code reference, our calculator provides instant, accurate results for freight classification.

The density calculation formula divides total weight by total cubic feet: Density = Weight (lbs) ÷ Cubic Feet. Cubic feet are calculated as Length × Width × Height (inches) ÷ 1,728. Higher density shipments receive lower freight classes and generally cost less to ship.
