About the Mounting Height Calculator

The Bock Lighting Mounting Height Calculator helps architects, designers, electricians, and homeowners determine the exact cord, stem, chain, or arm length needed to mount a lighting fixture at the desired height above finished floor (AFF).

Supported Mount Types

  • Cord: Flexible cord pendant mounts — most common for decorative pendants
  • Stem: Rigid stem mounts — used for fixed-height installations
  • Chain: Chain-hung mounts — adjustable, used for heavier fixtures
  • Gooseneck / Arm: Wall-mounted arm fixtures — horizontal extension from wall plate

How to Use

  1. Select your mounting type (cord, stem, chain, or gooseneck)
  2. Enter your ceiling height (or wall mount height for gooseneck)
  3. Enter the canopy or mount plate height
  4. Enter your desired fixture center height above the floor
  5. Enter the fixture body height
  6. The calculator instantly shows the required cord/stem/chain length
  7. Download a PDF with the diagram and specifications

Pendant Light Height Guide

This free mounting height calculator helps determine the correct cord length, stem length, or chain length for hanging pendant lights, chandeliers, and other suspended fixtures. Whether you're installing a pendant light over a kitchen island, dining table, or hallway, our calculator computes the exact mounting height needed for your specific ceiling height and desired fixture position above finished floor (AFF).

Vanity Light Height Standards

For bathroom vanity lights, the standard mounting height is 75 to 80 inches above finished floor, which positions the fixture approximately at eye level. Wall-mounted vanity sconces should be placed at 60 to 65 inches AFF when flanking a mirror. For pendant vanity lights, the bottom of the fixture should hang at approximately 65 to 70 inches AFF to provide adequate clearance while maintaining proper illumination of the vanity area.

Fixture Height by Room Type

Kitchen island pendant lights: 65-71 inches AFF (30-36 inches above counter). Dining table chandeliers: 60-66 inches AFF (30-36 inches above table). Hallway and foyer pendants: minimum 84 inches AFF (7 feet clearance). Stairwell fixtures: minimum 78 inches AFF at lowest point. Bedroom pendant lights: 84-96 inches AFF for ambient lighting. Bathroom vanity lights: 75-80 inches AFF for task lighting.

Gooseneck Sign Lighting Guide

Gooseneck lights are the industry standard for illuminating commercial signs, storefronts, and monument signs. When specifying gooseneck sign lights, consider three key dimensions: the wall mount height (how high the base plate is from the ground), the arm length (horizontal extension to reach the sign face), and the arm rise or drop (vertical offset at the arm end). Most gooseneck sign lights use a 10-20 inch arm for small signs and 24-36 inch arms for larger monument signs. LED gooseneck lights typically range from 1,000 to 5,000 lumens depending on the sign size and desired brightness. For energy efficiency, LED gooseneck fixtures use 10-50 watts compared to 100-300 watts for traditional metal halide sign lights.

Monument Sign Lighting Standards

Monument signs (also called ground signs or pylon signs) require special lighting considerations. The IES recommends 30 foot-candles minimum on the sign face for adequate nighttime visibility from roadways. Mount gooseneck lights 6-12 inches above the top of the monument sign, angled downward at approximately 30-45 degrees. For double-sided monument signs, install lights on both sides. Use LED fixtures with 3000K-4000K color temperature for commercial sign lighting — warm white (3000K) for restaurants and hospitality, neutral white (4000K) for retail and office buildings.
